The Allied Health Profession of Physiotherapy allows practitioners to diagnose and treat patients independently. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare describes that ‘‘Allied and healthcare professionals (AHPs) include individuals involved with the delivery of health or healthcare related services, with qualification and competence in therapeutic, diagnostic, curative, preventive and/or rehabilitative interventions”. The quality of medical care has improved tremendously in the last few decades due to the advances in technology, thus creating fresh challenges in the field of healthcare. It is now widely recognized that health service delivery is a team effort involving both clinicians and non‐clinicians. Professionals that can competently handle sophisticated machinery and advanced protocols are now in high demand. Effective
delivery of healthcare services depends largely on the nature of education, training and appropriate orientation towards community health of all categories of health personnel, and their capacity to function as an integrated team. “Physiotherapy means a system which includes comprehensive examination, treatment, advice and instructions to any persons preparatory to or for the purpose of or in connection with movement/functional dysfunction, bodily malfunction, physical disorder, disability, healing and pain from trauma & disease, physical and mental conditions using physical agents, activities & devices including exercise, mobilization, manipulations, electrical & thermal agents and other electro therapeutics for prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, health promotion and fitness.”
